When we think of healthy hair, we often think of shine, softness, or strength. Yet all of these characteristics share the same origin: the structure of the hair fiber.

Far from being a uniform structure, the hair fiber is composed of three distinct layers: the cuticle, cortex, and medulla. Each has a specific role, and together they determine how hair responds to heat, humidity, UV radiation, and chemical treatments.

Understanding the anatomy of the hair fiber is not simply a matter of biology—it is the key to understanding why hair ages, why it becomes damaged, and how cosmetic treatments truly work.

More Than Three Layers: An Architecture Designed to Protect the Hair Fiber

Although we often refer to hair as a single structure, each of its layers performs a distinct and essential function.

The cuticle acts as the fiber's protective shield, while the cortex provides its strength and elasticity.

At the center lies the medulla, a structure whose exact function remains, in part, one of the greatest mysteries in hair biology.

1. The Cuticle: The Hair's Protective Shield

The cuticle is the outermost layer of the hair fiber and serves as its first line of defense against external aggressors.

It is composed of five to eight overlapping layers of flattened cells, arranged much like roof shingles.

This highly organized structure creates a smooth surface that protects the inner fiber. However, the cuticle is much more than a physical barrier.

Its surface is coated with a thin lipid layer rich in 18-methyleicosanoic acid (18-MEA), an essential component that helps maintain lubrication, reduce friction, and limit water loss.

Over time, UV radiation, chemical treatments, heat styling, and mechanical friction gradually compromise this protective barrier. As the cuticle loses integrity, hair becomes more porous and begins to show the first visible signs of aging, including loss of shine, increased sensitivity to humidity, frizz, and breakage.

Hair shine depends far more on the condition of the cuticle than on its color. A smooth, intact cuticle reflects light like a mirror, whereas an uneven surface scatters light, making hair appear dull.

2. The Cortex: The Heart of the Hair Fiber

If the cuticle protects the hair, the cortex serves as its structural and functional core.

The cortex accounts for approximately 80–90% of the hair fiber and provides its strength, elasticity, and flexibility.

It consists of a highly organized network of keratin proteins, while also housing melanin, the pigment responsible for natural hair color.

The remarkable resilience of the hair fiber depends on the organization of these keratin structures and the molecular bonds that hold them together.

Natural hair color is not located on the surface of the fiber. Melanin is found deep within the cortex, which is why any coloring or bleaching process must first penetrate the cuticle before reaching the pigment.

3. The Medulla: The Great Unknown

The medulla occupies the innermost region of the hair fiber and remains one of the least understood structures in hair biology.

Interestingly, many fine hairs do not contain a medulla at all, yet they function perfectly normally.

Although its precise role continues to be investigated, current evidence suggests that it contributes far less to the cosmetic properties of hair than either the cuticle or the cortex.

An Architecture Designed for Longevity

Each layer of the hair fiber has a distinct function, yet it is their interaction that ultimately determines hair quality.

An intact cuticle protects the inner fiber. A well-organized cortex provides strength and elasticity.

And the medulla, despite the many questions that remain about its function, completes the architecture of one of the body's most resilient biological structures.

Understanding how hair is built helps explain why it ages, how it responds to everyday environmental stressors, and why truly effective haircare must work in harmony with the biology of every layer of the hair fiber.
